Temperature-Measurement Equipment Upgrade Project for the Wudu–Jiuzhaigou Section of National Expressway G8513, Pingliang–Mianyang Highway

G8513 Wujiu Expressway has activated temperature‑screening equipment to ensure safe tunnel traffic.

Recently, the Wudu–Jiuzhaigou section of the Pingliang–Mianyang National Expressway (G8513) has completed a major upgrade to its safety infrastructure: temperature‑monitoring equipment has been fully commissioned. The deployment of this new technology represents a pivotal step in enhancing tunnel safety and operational efficiency along this stretch, with the aim of further ensuring the travel safety of drivers and passengers.

The Wujiu Expressway, as a vital transportation corridor linking Gansu and Sichuan, plays a crucial role in regional economic development and the exploitation of tourism resources. With a total length of 100.14 kilometers, it begins in Jujian Township, Wudu District, connecting via a hub interchange to the Wudu–Guanzigou section of the Lanzhou–Haikou National Expressway (G75). The route traverses numerous townships and terminates at Qinglong Bridge on the Gansu–Sichuan border, where it links up with the Mianyang–Jiuzhaigou Expressway in Sichuan Province. Along its path, the terrain is complex and features numerous tunnels; when vehicles pass through these tunnels, factors such as the enclosed environment and limited ventilation can cause critical components—such as the engine and tires—to overheat after prolonged operation, posing significant safety risks.

The newly commissioned temperature‑monitoring equipment employs advanced infrared thermal imaging technology, enabling real-time, precise measurement of temperatures on vehicle components such as the engine and tires. Installed at tunnel entrances and key locations, the system rapidly captures temperature data from relevant vehicle parts and compares it against preset safety thresholds. If an abnormal temperature is detected, the device immediately triggers an audible and visual alarm and transmits an alert to the monitoring center. Upon receiving the alert, monitoring‑center personnel promptly use the tunnel’s public‑address system to notify drivers, guiding them to safely pull over into an emergency stopping bay for inspection and cooling, thereby preventing serious incidents such as fires or tire blowouts caused by overheating.

To ensure the stable and efficient operation of temperature‑monitoring equipment, the Wujiu Expressway management has established a comprehensive equipment maintenance and emergency response system. On the one hand, it deploys a specialized technical team to conduct regular inspections, calibrations, and maintenance, promptly addressing any issues that arise during operation. On the other hand, in response to over‑temperature alerts, it has developed detailed contingency plans, clearly defining the responsibilities of each department and outlining standardized emergency procedures, thereby enhancing response speed and interdepartmental coordination.

The deployment of this temperature‑monitoring equipment on the Wujiu Expressway represents a significant step forward in the intelligent and safety‑oriented management of expressways. Moving forward, the Wujiu Expressway authorities will continue to closely monitor the equipment’s performance, iteratively refine its features, and further enhance the highway’s safety‑assurance capabilities. This effort will help create a safer, smoother, and more comfortable travel experience for drivers and passengers, while supporting the region’s economic and social development.
