Technical Features and Application Case Studies of the Vehicle Temperature‑Monitoring System for the Yulin Section of the Donglü Expressway Tunnel

The G2516 Donglü Expressway and the Yulu Section’s extra-long tunnel have activated a vehicle temperature‑monitoring system, bolstering road safety defenses.

The G2516 Donglü Expressway and the Yulin section’s extra-long tunnel have officially put into operation an intelligent vehicle temperature‑monitoring system. Leveraging advanced technology, the system continuously tracks the temperature of passing vehicles, effectively preventing fire‑related safety incidents caused by high temperatures and adding another “smart safeguard” to ensure safe tunnel operations.

As a vital transportation artery linking Shanxi and Hebei provinces, the eastern section of the Donglü Expressway is a quintessential extra-long road tunnel in North China, characterized by heavy daily traffic volumes and a high proportion of large trucks. Due to the tunnel’s enclosed space and unique ventilation conditions, prolonged driving or mechanical malfunctions can cause abnormal temperature rises in components such as tires and braking systems. If these issues are not detected promptly, they may lead to serious incidents like spontaneous combustion or rear-end collisions, posing significant risks to both the tunnel structure and the safety of drivers and passengers.

The newly commissioned vehicle temperature‑monitoring system leverages high‑definition infrared thermal imaging technology and intelligent analytical algorithms. By deploying monitoring devices at tunnel entrances and key road segments, it enables non‑contact, real‑time temperature measurement of critical vehicle components, including tires, brake discs, and the engine compartment. The system can swiftly identify vehicles with abnormal temperatures and, through audible and visual alarms as well as information‑board alerts, promptly notify on‑site personnel and drivers, guiding vehicles to safe areas for inspection and preventing potential hazards from escalating. In addition, the system features data recording and analysis capabilities, automatically generating vehicle temperature‑monitoring reports to provide tunnel operators with precise, data‑driven insights for enhanced safety management.

“Safety management in long tunnels allows for no room for carelessness,” said the head of the operations and management department for the Donglü Expressway’s Héyú section. With the deployment of a vehicle temperature‑monitoring system, the approach has shifted from “reactive response” to “proactive early warning,” boosting the efficiency of hazard identification while providing drivers and passengers with more timely risk alerts. Moving forward, the management team will continue to refine the system’s algorithms and integrate them with intelligent control systems for tunnel ventilation, lighting, and other critical functions, thereby establishing a comprehensive tunnel safety‑monitoring network to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the G2516 Donglü Expressway.

The deployment of this vehicle temperature‑monitoring system represents a concrete step in the Donglü Expressway’s implementation of its “technology‑driven safety” strategy. It provides robust technical support for the safe operation of extra‑long tunnels and offers valuable, replicable insights for upgrading safety management in similar tunnels nationwide.
