Jiangxi’s first smart highway, the Ningding Expressway, has been completed.

During this year’s National Day holiday, motorists traveling on the Ningdu–Dingnan Expressway within Ganzhou will notice numerous smart devices along the route—road‑condition information panels visible overhead and intelligent monitoring systems installed in special sections such as slope‑side tunnels. This is the province’s first smart expressway.

The Ningdu–Dingnan Expressway begins at its junction with the Changning (Nanchang–Ningdu) Expressway and terminates near the Laocheng Toll Station on the Daguan Expressway (at the Jiangxi–Guangdong border) via the Dingnan Connector.
Traveling south from Nanchang along the Changning–Ningding Expressway, within Anyuan County and at the foot of Sanbai Mountain—the source of the Dongjiang River—you’ll find the Sanbai Mountain Service Area, a smart, integrated facility offering leisure, shopping, refueling, and more. Within one kilometer of the service area’s entrance, information panels allow drivers to easily check real-time data on crowd levels, available parking spaces, and gas station queue lengths, helping them plan ahead. Once inside, an intelligent parking guidance system directs vehicles automatically to open spots. Vehicles entering the service area are also connected to its free Wi‑Fi, while drivers and passengers can use self-service kiosks in the service hall to access detailed maps of the facility’s amenities and view up-to-the-minute traffic conditions across the province’s expressways.
Smart road network monitoring alerts vehicles to overheating and overpressure.
Walking along the Ningding Expressway, in special sections such as high embankments, tunnels, long-grade stretches, interchange hubs, and foggy areas, a network of monitoring devices collects fundamental operational data. On long-grade segments, the monitoring system continuously tracks the speed, tire pressure, tire temperature, and cargo‑compartment temperature of passing trucks. When temperatures or pressures exceed safe thresholds, roadside information panels, flashing warning lights, and directional broadcast systems alert approaching vehicles and guide them into designated safety‑evacuation zones.
The Ningding Expressway has established a rapid emergency rescue and command‑dispatch system. When a vehicle is involved in an accident, the driver can call the emergency hotline, and the emergency command platform will accurately pinpoint the vehicle’s location, predict potential traffic congestion, and activate a traffic‑diversion plan based on the congestion conditions along the affected stretch. Subsequently, via automated SMS messages to drivers and real-time alerts on electronic message boards, vehicles approaching the scene are advised to bypass the congested area, thereby alleviating traffic pressure in the accident zone.
