Hebei Province’s expressways will, for the first time, employ laser-based night‑vision surveillance technology.

Hebei Province’s expressways will, for the first time, employ laser-based night‑vision surveillance technology.

In the field of highway management, achieving continuous, blind-spot‑free surveillance has long been a pressing challenge. Recently, the Hebei Provincial Department of Transport announced that the Shijiazhuang–Huanghua Port Expressway Management Office plans to invest over 50 million yuan to complete the installation of a full‑route monitoring system by the end of October this year. Notably, the laser night‑vision technology employed in this system represents the first such application in Hebei’s expressway network, promising 24‑hour, blind‑spot‑free monitoring of road conditions and traffic.

Feng Jianwu, deputy director of the Shihuang Expressway Management Office, explained: “This surveillance system boasts exceptionally powerful capabilities. Even in pitch‑black nighttime conditions, and despite significant glare from vehicle headlights, it can still provide detailed monitoring of both the roadway and surrounding objects, achieving truly 24‑hour, blind‑spot‑free coverage.” The laser night‑vision cameras deliver outstanding image quality: during the day, they capture high‑definition color footage, while at night they switch to crisp black‑and‑white images. According to the plan, by the end of October this year, an “electronic eye” will be installed along the Shihuang Expressway approximately every 1.5 kilometers. These devices will be mounted on dedicated poles; in addition to the camera, each pole is equipped with a voice‑communication system, enabling real‑time audio communication between road users and monitoring personnel.

In the past, highway traffic‑condition information relied primarily on on‑site patrols by road administration and highway police, a method that often resulted in delayed updates. With the installation of high‑density “electronic eyes,” whenever a traffic incident or accident occurs on the highway, the central monitoring room’s equipment immediately triggers an alarm, while the display screen shows live footage of the scene along with precise location details. This enables road administration and traffic police to reach the site as quickly as possible.

Fengjian Wu also specifically pointed out: “The system is equipped with an automatic crime‑event‑locking function. If a criminal or unlawful incident occurs on the highway, the system will detect an abnormal situation; after confirmation and alarm activation by monitoring personnel, the surveillance cameras will automatically adjust their angle and zoom in to conduct a detailed observation and recording of the scene, while simultaneously locking onto the target and continuing to track and film it.”

Laser night‑vision technology, as an advanced surveillance method, has already been successfully deployed in various other fields. By emitting laser beams to illuminate the monitored area and thereby capturing high‑resolution images, it effectively addresses the limitations of conventional surveillance systems in low‑light or nighttime conditions. With the adoption of this technology on Hebei Province’s expressways, the level of surveillance and operational efficiency is expected to improve significantly, providing stronger safeguards for the safe travel of vehicles and further enhancing both safety and management effectiveness on these highways.

As the installation plan progresses through late October, Hebei Province’s highway management is poised to enter a new era of intelligent and efficient operations. Let us look forward to laser‑based night‑vision surveillance technology playing an even greater role in ensuring the safety and smooth flow of traffic on the expressways.
